Natural vs. Cultured

While popular stones, such as sapphires & diamonds, form as minerals underground, pearls are the only jewel that comes from a living creature! They develop organically inside various species of freshwater and saltwater mollusks. They are created when mollusks sense an irritant and respond by layering pearly substances to protect themselves. Over time, these layers accumulate (every grain of sand can be seen as an irritant to a mollusk), resulting in a concentric structure of energy and safeguarding.  In essence, pearls are considered gems, but they are not stones.

The premature death of oysters in the wild are one of the main factors that make natural pearls an incredible rarity - it takes 100,000+ animals to create a single strand!

It was around this time that the cultured pearl was developed as a way to combat the increasingly high prices of natural pearls.

Kokichi Mikimoto, credited with being the first to successfully cultivate  is recognized as the pioneer of cultured pearls, credited with being the first person to successfully cultivate these exquisite gems. In 1878, he embarked on a systematic exploration of methods to develop pearls within his own oyster beds. Through nearly two decades of persistent experimentation, he eventually achieved his breakthrough and was granted a patent for cultured pearls in 1896. This groundbreaking achievement had a profound impact on the pearl industry.

Mikimoto's discovery not only met the global demand for pearls in a more sustainable manner, but it also had repercussions for the natural pearl market. As people began to embrace these more affordable and uniformly shaped pearls, the demand for natural pearls diminished. Mikimoto once expressed his dream of adorning the necks of women worldwide with pearls, a vision that many would argue he successfully realized.

Cultured pearls are made using the same process as a natural pearl, only the irritant is deliberately inserted into the oyster through human intervention. The oysters used to create cultured pearls are kept in controlled environments that increase the survival rate of the oyster. These factors allow oyster farmers to create high quality pearls at a much faster rate, thus creating an affordable market for pearls. Ultimately, the only difference between natural and cultured pearls is the way the irritant makes its way into the animal's muscle tissue. Cultured pearls are grown inside the animal in the same way as their natural equivalent and therefore create gemstones of the same quality. In fact, the cultivation process of cultured pearls has experienced such incredible technological advances over the past decade that some consider them to be higher quality than those grown naturally! And it's a good thing cultured pearls have come so far - according to the American Gem Society, most of the ocean's natural pearls have already been collected by oyster divers. There are very few, if any, left in the seas to harvest anymore.

Even more, pearls are the only gemstone that is collected without undergoing cutting, shaping, or artificial alterations. They are formed by living creatures and carry with them their inherent consciousness and profound significance. Our pieces are relatively delicate & are not meant to be worn during harsh activities, such as sports, cleaning, gardening, etc. 

・Take your jewelry off when swimming in pools, hot tubs, or the ocean. 

Chlorine & salt water will degrade the metal, causing your jewelry to tarnish at an accelerated rate. However, wearing your gold-filled jewelry in the shower or bath is fine, as long you dry it off properly.

・Apply makeup, lotion, hairspray, & perfume before you put on your jewelry. 

・Avoid excessive contact with sunscreen. The chemicals in sunscreen are harsh on most metals.

・Take off your jewelry at the nail salon or when doing your nails at home. Nail polish remover is a harsh chemical that does not play well with gold-filled jewelry.

・Take off your jewelry before participating in activities that will cause heavy sweating. Some people’s body chemistry (which is affected by many factors, including hormones, medications) is more harsh on jewelry than others. Only ~10% of people find their body does not pair well with gold jewelry, however, better safe than sorry! Removing your jewelry before working out, tanning, etc. will ensure your jewelry will remain in pristine condition.
