Elizabeth blackburn was born in Tasmania in 1948. She was fascinated with science & the nature of animals from a very young age, keeping tadpoles in glass jars to watch their metamorphosis & decorating her bedroom with pictures of amino acids. After graduating from the University of Melbourne at 24, she began her doctoral research at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, the epicenter of molecular biology at the time, in Cambridge, England. After marrying and moving to the United States, Elizabeth began the foundation of her research into telomeres that earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Her work offers hope for cancer treatment, clues to the mystery of aging and even biological links between life circumstance and lifespan. She continues to work on this mystery today, explaining that her work is never done, and “aging is so many different things, and cells being able to self-renew is part of the picture, but not all of it.”
